Dragging and Resizing Windows

With Vermont Views' window management, it is possible to drag a window with the mouse or the keyboard. When dragging, Vermont Views does not restrict the window to remaining within the screen's boundaries. It is therefore possible to drag the window so that most of its contents are off the screen. The minimum amount that must remain visible is one character; the rest of the window can go beyond the screen's boundaries. As the window is dragged back, it is restored.

Vermont Views also allows you to resize windows with the mouse or the keyboard. As you shrink a window, the inside work area gets smaller; the buffer (memory screen or memory file) does not change, only the amount of information you can see through the window. You can shrink the window so that its inside dimensions are just one character. The margins and border remain intact as the resizing is done. For instance, a window that has a border and right and left margins of one can be made as small as three rows by five columns.

As you increase the size of the window, the work area grows, but again the buffer does not change in size. If you increase a window larger than the size of its buffer, the extra area to the right and bottom is considered a virtual margin. The extra space is written using the window's margin character and attribute.

Note: Dragging and resizing a window will automatically bring it to the top of the linked list of windows. Vermont Views automatically updates the display so that the overlapping areas are displayed appropriately.
