Where to Find the Information You Need

The Vermont Views documentation set is organized into three manuals and one booklet.

The manuals are designed to work together to give you complete information. A typical path to take when using a Vermont Views feature for the first time is outlined below:

  1. Use the Designer to create a screen containing the new feature, and experiment. Use on-line help and the Designer User's Guide to help you when necessary. Try some of the available options to see how they work.

  2. Read about the feature in the User's Guide to learn about implementation specifics and restrictions.

  3. See the categorical listing of Vermont Views functions available for that feature in the front of the Function Reference. This is a fast way to find out what can be done with a feature. The Function Reference also contains a complete description of each Vermont Views function. The reference pages for each function are arranged alphabetically by function name.

  4. Find the relevant data definitions in the "Tables" and "Structures" sections of the Function Reference. You can also look directly in the appropriate header files(s).

  5. Look at the related tutorials. Examine the tutorial source code, compile, and run it. Experiment by making changes and see what happens. A listing of tutorials can be found in read_me.tut in the tutorial directory. Specific tutorials are listed at the end of each chapter in the User's Guide.
